The Creative Process
Dear Friends,
I’m in midst of that introspective, wonderful but often disorienting process of creating and writing new work. The only way to know if an idea truly lives is to test it – to let it fail, or surprise you. Sometimes the purpose of an idea is simply to move you in an entirely different direction. I find it helpful to think of an idea as larger than myself – to remember that whether it takes flight or not, isn’t entirely up to me.
“The life of any idea does not fully open until it meets its receiver – in my case all of you, my students, my sangha.
”
And here is the paradox – even when something does blossom, what worked beautifully yesterday might not work at all tomorrow, under slightly different conditions. I like to keep my ideas open ended – always leaving a crack for something new to come in. More often than not, there are no right answers, only shifting perspectives – and the more viewpoints we can open to, the richer our world becomes. What I have come to trust is that there is something to be learned from the process itself – regardless of the outcome.
I look forward to sharing, testing, wrestling with, and growing this new work together when we meet next.
With love and blessings,
